Tottenham Court Road Station – Information for Travellers

Overview

Tottenham Court Road is one of central London’s most important interchange stations, sitting at the busy junction where Oxford Street meets Charing Cross Road in the heart of the West End. Opened in 1900 on the Central London Railway, it was comprehensively rebuilt and greatly expanded following the arrival of the Elizabeth line (opened 2022), which transformed it into one of the network’s major cross-London hubs, serving three lines: the Central, Elizabeth, and Northern lines.

The station is the primary Underground gateway to the West End shopping district along Oxford Street, the entertainment venues of Soho, the theatres of Shaftesbury Avenue, the independent bookshops and music venues of Charing Cross Road, and the museums and university buildings of Bloomsbury to the north. The Elizabeth line platforms at this station form part of the new Crossrail tunnel running east–west beneath central London, making it one of the fastest interchange points for cross-city journeys.

The station’s ticket hall and concourse were redesigned as part of the major Elizabeth line works, and feature notable public artworks including Eduardo Paolozzi’s striking mosaic designs (installed as part of the 1980s refurbishment) preserved in the original Underground concourse areas.
